teaching...

As you know, I did not know what I would be doing here for 2 months. I was following where I thought God wanted me to be. I found out a couple of weeks before I left, that I had an opportunity to teach English to the ladies and to villagers. I was supposed to start on Friday, but there was funeral in town and that took several people from the class. So the start waited until Saturday around 9:30am. I found out some of the customs surrounding the funeral. They bury the dead the day after the death. The next day, there is a meeting of those in the village to decide who might care for the children (if both parents have died) and other affairs. I also found out that this is the time for harvesting corn. Several of the ladies from the village needed to do that in the mornings. We then changed the time to the afternoon.
Saturday morning, I had 4 ladies from the village show up for class. They were Jennifer, Susan, Justina and Jeanie. One of the ladies here from the college also joined us. Her name was Carol. So, today I had 5 ladies to teach. We practiced the alphabet and writing the vowels. I think it will be a fun adventure as I have never taught anyone to speak English before. Monday promises to have more students from the village and more ladies from the college. Please pray that things will go smoothly and that I can be effective. I'm hoping to be able to teach them a song in English, “I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord Forever”. I'm hoping that I will also be able to give each student an English Bible or New Testament.
Thank you for your continued prayers. I will try to update my blog as much as possible.
