Breakfast consisted of PORRIDGE with peanut butter!!!, scones, and boiled eggs. It was very yummy!
This morning, I spent time with the Sophomores and Seniors and listening to them sing. Oh, How I love their voices!!! I was able to record the music, so that I can take it back with me. I did get some pictures of the students in class. I'm really trying to keep track of all of the names, but it is difficult. I'm trying to learn about each student as well. What a task!
I did go to the Junior class too and take pictures.
After classes started, I headed to take pictures of Compounds 1-7. There are many cabins completed, but many more to go.
I did give Davina and Mary a few clothes to was for me. I needed my jeans and socks washed so that I had some clean clothing. My suitcase should arrive Thursday. So far, I'm not really missing anything. I mean, it would be nice to have my belongings, but, I”m surviving without them. There are a few things that I really wished I had, like my tennis shoes, and maybe an extra pair of socks. Not a big deal. I've been surviving with my sandals and 1 pair of socks.
Lunch included nshima, beans, and rice.
This afternoon, I went with Frances for him to show me the garden. They have chinese cabbage, cabbage, rape, tomatoes, peppers, and several other leafy veggies. I was able to speak to Frances, Jailos, and Gift and get to know them. They are from Malawi. Jailos and Gift work making scones, and Frances works in the garden. I did talk to Isaac Daka and Loufeyo and toured the chicken buildings. Right now, they have 609 chicks. Every 1 ½ hours, they need to check the charcoal that is in the building to make sure it's providing enough heat for the chicks. Even through the night, they need to get up and check. There are 4 guys that are in charge of the poultry. They take turns caring for the chicks and making sure they have food, water and heat. Once the chicks are ready, they will take them into Lusaka to sell and raise money. About 200 chicks will stay at the college for consumption. Next week, they will be getting another 500 chicks for building 2. It is quite interesting and it seems to be working.
After the gardens, I headed off to workshop to pick up my netbook and camera battery. Unfortunately, they were not charged. I did see many students digging a trench for cable to go to Compound 13. They were hard at work. I met many more guys and saw the work that they are doing. I met Frightened and Sampson who has a twin (Samuel) slashing grass. What a fun group!
I then met up with some guys and went to the soccer field where they were having practice. I met a few more guys and then a couple of guys from the village. One guy (Alford) works at the college. I found that his mother was Joyce. I'm hoping to see Joyce this week as well. I would like to go to the local village to meet with some of the ladies and to see how some of my students live. I'm not sure how possible that is, but we shall see.
After soccer practice, I headed to get the sunset. BEAUTIFUL!!! I talked with Gift on the way. It was neat to see him stop, and notice the sunset and awesome it is. I spoke with Gift, Dorene and Frances and listened to music. It has been great getting to know the students. Before dinner, I had the opportunity to speak with Davis. He and Richard Banda are planning a trip to the college Thursday. I am excited to see both of them!! I spoke with Joshua Daka to see how his family is doing. It sounds like they are all doing well.
Dinner included french fries (fried potato wedges) and meat. I had a chance to eat with Mildred and ask questions about her family. After dinner, we headed to choir practice. Harold is the choir director and has had some formal training. They were singing songs that I had never heard before.
After choir practice, Mildred and I headed to my cabin so that she could see pictures of the family. I can't wait to see her family! I also gave Mildred the gifts that we had bought her. She really seemed to like the books. I really hope that she will truly enjoy them. Mildred couldn't stay long because she needed to go study for a quiz.
I was able to get some pretty good shots of the stars and star trails. I just hope they look as good on the big computer screen as they do on my camera.
